To reach the Chewelah Pioneer Cemetery take Main Street east for about a mile. The street turns into Flowery Trail Road, and you will know you are near when you see the Donkey Ranch on the right. The cemetery is on your left with Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery abutting it on the north side.

The northeast Section is the largest and oldest area. The southwest is smaller as is the northwest section. The southeast area is midsized. I named the areas between the roads. The cemetery sexton may very well list them differently. I could have combined the two west sections, had I read them at separate times. They do run into each other.

The City of Chewelah purchased this cemetery from Mary Starry for $1.00 on July 31, 1925. Records prior to this date may not exist, at least by the city.

The name of 'Chewelah Pioneer Cemetery' was made final on Sep 02, 1998. The "Chewelah Pioneer Cemetery Association" was established in January of 1997. They are a group of people who take pride in this cemetery and have done an astonishing amount of work to better it, under the auspices of the city.

When a photo is not available, or there was no marker, I have placed an asterisk * after the name. I either hand copied it or acquired the record elsewhere. A few records are from other sources, usually previous readings, or recent deaths I was aware of. I hope to acquire the Sexton files later, to be able to add missing names I did not find a marker for. I will share my photos if they are good enough. Some do not turn out as well as hoped.

I walked this cemetery in three sessions starting Mar 31, 2002 and finishing in July of 2002. I use a digital camera, which means I have photos of most of the stones. Some transcriptions had to be copied manually. In 2006 I compared my readings with the city records. I have some they do not have, those followed by CC are from the city records. I left my section breakdown, and added the city locations following them. I visited again in Nov of 2009 with my camera, then added names I found in a 1976 reading by Ruth Smith and Belva Pederson which I found not markers for, these are marked with RB.
