To reach this cemetery in northeast Spokane, drive east on Francis Avenue
from Market Street, continuing over the bridge as it turns into Bigelow
Gulch Road, Then left or north onto Palmer Road. The cemetery is on east
side of Palmer Road .7 mile north of Bigelow Gulch Road.
According to the information I found at the Spokane County Engineer's
Office, this cemetery is owned by the Bishop of the Spokane Catholic
Diocese. It receives no maintenance except for a few volunteers occasionally.
Most of the graves are marked with a small white cross, but the writing
is no longer readable on them. At some time in the past years a group
of Orchard Prairie 4-H youngsters did research and made a large sign
with all the names they found who are buried here. I found a few that
had recently had new headstones placed upon their graves. In about 2006
the Shoenberg grandchildren cleaned it out and replaced the small white
wooden crosses.
It is said that Chief Peone did not wish to have his name on his grave
so a large white cross is over it. This cross still stands in the north
east corner of the cemetery. This cemetery is in great need of care.
The family of Pioneer, Peter Schoenberg, who arrived here in 1884,
was the first White family to be buried in this cemetery and their family
helps to maintain the cemetery when they are able to. The cemetery was
established in 1866 as part of a Roman Catholic outreach to the Spokane
Indians.
These are the readings I obtained when I surveyed Saint Michael Mission
cemetery Sep 05, 1998, with additions from old records or people as
they became available.
