Evergreen Cemetery

Evergreen Cemetery is on 14 acres of land, located on the west side of Market street about a block south of the corner of Market and Hawthorne in Mead, WA.

The first meeting recorded in the minutes for the Hillyard Masonic Cemetery Association was on Aug 26, 1909 to have the land surveyed, to lay out and develop the Evergreen Cemetery. This cemetery was owned by the Masonic Lodge at that time and was managed and maintained by the Hillyard Masonic Cemetery Association to Apr 26, 1930.

In March of 1930 the cemetery was sold for $240.00 to a Mr Knight of the New England Undertaking Co, after which the Hillyard Masonic Cemetery Association disbanded. I am told it was owned by a Mr Dodd at one time, but I have no more information on all of the owners.

This cemetery has been in the midst of much controversy during the past many years. I was finally able to see and copy from the Sexton records, which are held by a member of the Masonic Lodge, to be placed in their library when it is completed, in Spokane.

The first burial recorded was Rachel Prehm in Nov 1909, however there are earlier burials recorded. Either this land was used as a burial site previous to it becoming Evergreen Cemetery, or there were previous burials removed and reburied in this cemetery from farms etc.

I went through these records and added names which I did not find a headstone for, or added location to existing readings I had. I have walked the cemetery and read all the readable stones previous to finding these records.

Evergreen is no longer maintained and it has been abandoned for decades. It is owned by the same people who own and neglect Resthaven Cemetery. The owner lives in Arizona. Vada R. Hoblin Trust 510 Wilshire Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89110-4149

Some of the burials were in the Poor Farm Section, others were burials of those who died at the Poor Farm, but not necessarily buried in the Poor Farm section. Some entries in the ledger did not have the location listed.

There is a fenced in area on a small hill on the northwest end. You will find a memorial dedicated to Veterans of all wars. The listing for these is at the end of this transcription. Some of the names will be listed again as buried inside the fence and some outside in the main area of Evergreen Cemetery. Some not buried in this cemetery.

First transcribed on Oct 10, 1998 from readings of all existing and legible headstones and markers, when I walked the cemetery. There may be many other burials in this cemetery, for those buried here after it was sold. I was able to compare from the first sexton files, Feb 26, 2005 and added any information to my work which I did not have. I also reread the cemetery on Apr 27, 2005, using my digital camera, so I have a photo of all existing and legible stones or markers at that time.
