This is the stone over the burial place of Chief Joseph, leader of the Nez Perce Indians, who was exiled to a reservation in the Northern Washington Territory in May of 1885. Following many battles, Chief Joseph and his small band of followers, a total of about 150 were sent to the Colville Indian Reservation, now headquartered at Nespelem, Okanogan County WA, to live out the remainder of their years.
