To reach this cemetery drive south of Omak on Hwy 97 till you reach the
crossroads east of Okanogan. If you go right it turns west into the town
of Okanogan, but we want to go east onto Cameron Lake Road. Take this
road for about 12 miles. I did not get a good mileage count because I
did some backtracking. I estimate it to be about 15mi from Hwy 97 to the
cemetery.
After several miles you will want to take the Cameron Lake Loop Road
off to your right and continue till you are sure you have gone too far,
then go a ways further. When you come to the blue roofed barn on the
Promise Land Ranch it will be the next road to your left. This is across
the road from a place called the Broken D Ranch. The number of the Promise
Land Ranch is 228 Cameron Lake Loop Rd.
I walked in on this last road because I was unsure if I could drive
it. I think it was about a mile, mostly uphill, past the neighborhood
dump, with a temp that day in the triple digits, so it seemed farther
than it really was. I am sure a car could make it.
When we finally reach the cemetery, we find a very small, well maintained
cemetery, with this well built fence around it. I found burial dates
ranging from 1933 to quite recently. I am sure it is active. It was
refreshing to find this well kept burial site so far from the beaten
track.
I was told by the gentleman who directed me to this cemetery that
it has been called the Back Forty Cemetery, and most likely was a family
cemetery to begin with, from the old homestead days. It very well may
have unmarked graves in it. I walked and read it on Jul 19, 2002.
