To reach the Phoenix Cemetery, drive east out of Greenwood on the Phoenix road for about 5 km. The cemetery is on the right down the hillside, with only the top section easily visible.

This cemetery was established in 1901 to accommodate the new mining town of Phoenix, BC, after the discovery of gold and later copper in this area. The first burial was in 1902. I am told the population grew to 4,000 by 1911.

The town of Phoenix ceased to exist about 1950. It was further up the road toward the top of the mountain, where a cenetaph can be seen now, on the left side of the road, commemorating veterans of WWI from where the town of Phoenix apparently was.

There is one section of this cemetery, that is fenced off at the top beside the road, with only a few burials in it. As you walk down the hill, many areas have been fenced to protect the stones. Many fences are painted white to give the cemetery a nicer appearance. Many stones are broken beyond repair, and illegible to read, while many others are missing. Some markers were made from flat plank type boards, which become very difficult to read eventually if they did not decay.

I was unable to find all the stones or markers I am quite sure, but I acquired a previous transcription done in 1957 by Lois M Haggen. For further information about the town and cemetery you can contact the Greenwood Heritage Society at the number given above. Those names added from this reading, which I did not find, have an asterisk * following the entry.

I walked and read this cemetery on Aug 13, 2004, using my digital camera. I am happy to share a photo for a nominal fee if I have one that is needed for family records only.
